Used Copy - Guild Wars Forums

So, I'm thinking of picking up a used copy of Guild Wars, as I can get it super cheap. My only question is, doesn't the CD come with some sort of activation code? If this is a used copy, will the key work on my account or will it give me some big error, like: THIS KEY HAS ALREADY BEEN USED!! Thanks in advance for your answers.

Yes, absolutely sure. There's no way you can buy a used account without it being a rip off. Not to mention it violates the EULA.

Well, That's all good and well, but I'm not buying a used account, just a used copy of the game. Does *that* violate the EULA? I'm just wondering, if I buy this used copy, will I have nothing more than a copy of the game, or will it work as a full version? Will I be able to upgrade my Trial Account with this disc? That's the question I'm asking.

You need to understand that the disk is worthless, only the activation code is important, if the activation code has been used then it cannot be reused.

Yes. The disk is irrelevant. You can download the game from the GW website for free. If you don't have a valid, unused keycode, you can't play it.

The game client, IE, all the graphics, engine etc. are available from the website. What a player really needs is an account, to make use of the software.

The used game will include an access code that allows the creation of the account. If it has already been used, the entire box is worthless, except for the paper manuals etc. You'd better buy a legitimate new code and use that, just downloading the client.

You could get the account login from the previous player, but you'd have to use whatever email he used as the login name. Aside from all the trouble this would cause, Anet's EULA prohibits the transfer of accounts, so you'd technically be liable to get banned.

Whatever our opinion of first sale right exhaustion limitations in the EULA may be, this forum frowns on EULA violations, so expect little help or sympathy.

As said above really. The boxset, without the cdkey, is pretty much worthless, it will not get you into the game, it will install sure, and update, but it wont let you logon. All it will get you is a nice collection of books etc. You will not be able to use its cdkey again to create another account.

Even if the seller gives you his/her old account, its leaving you wide open to hacking, and also again as said, is a breach of licence agreements and could end in a ban.

The game is cheap enough to buy anyways now, in the UK, ive seen the complete collection for under ??15, including delivery. Cant speak for outside it but im guessing a good hunt would turn up a similar bargain.

The last 2 times ive reinstalled guildwars (Once for a new PC, 2nd for a windows reinstall), ive simply copied the GuildWars folder from one drive, onto the new one (Or left it where it was in the case of the reinstall), and simply run GW.EXE.... it fixes itself and away I go.... heck it would probably take me hours to find the original disks anyways in the loft

yeah not sure aobut anywhere else but here in the UK you can pick up teh complete collection for ??15 thats each campagian/EP at ??3.75 or something each. thats cheap (for me anyway). i don't know why there are plenty of used GW copies on sale on amazon without any trouble either especially if it breaches rules.

It's not a CD Key, it's an account key, and no...if it's been used, it's been used, just get a new one.

Technically it might be (though I dont think it is) breaking the rules, but...in reality...just stop and think for one moment, arenanet has no idea the account keys inside those boxes, even if they are new, buying them from an unofficial source is not going to get you banned. It's not like the key can talk to them and say "hey, I was illegally sold" doesn't work like that or happen.

You just got scammed. Once the access key has been activated, it can no longer be used. Contact the vendor of the software and tell them this.

Also its possible to steal his account with his access key. If you know his character name, shoot an email to NCSOFT to recover the account. Then change the email or password if possible. However that's the evil way.
